After the late night on Friday at The Warstore Weekend playing in the 35 point Steamroller, I was pretty pumped up about playing Retribution. My original plan was to play in Saturday evening’s Hardcore tournament with my Cryx(who are fully painted) but 2 things changed my mind. First, I was having a blast playing Retribution, especially Kaelyssa. Second, the TO announced on Friday that they would start the Hardcore whenever the Steamroller was over, whether that was early or late. I thought that this was pretty odd. Starting late I understand but that they would start early potentially making people miss it I didn’t like. With that the 50 point Steamroller was on!
So I’ve played a while with my Cryx and I’ve been thinking about starting another army. I’m feeling reasonably comfortable with my Cryx, 4 tournaments or so and went 2-1 at the New England Team Tournament losing in the last round, and I will by no means stop playing them but with my gamer ADD kicking in I’d like to have another army to kick around.
So I want something different. Not a lot of the other Warmachine armies particularly grab me so Hordes it is. Of the 4 Hordes factions I’m actually drawn to all of them except Circle. Neither the models nor the theme suits me. Of the other three I’m having a really tough time choosing so my plan is to get together a small army of each and give them a shot.
The other big change I would like at least at the beginning is to run beast heavy having played so much infantry with Cryx. Beast heavy ideally meaning almost all beasts with some support thrown in. Skorne may be slightly problematic as so many of their casters are infantry oriented but it will still be fun. Based on this and the number of Legion players around I’ve decided to start my trials with the Trollbloods.
Here’s the sample 500 point list I have tried out.
Dire Troll Mauler
Dire Troll Blitzer
I’ve played 2 games. The first I actually had Saxon Orrik in place of Lanyssa for his trail blazer ability forgetting that Grim already has that, so he’s out.
First game was against Alistair Caine, that jerk. The scenario was to grab 3 of the table sections running between deployment zones. He ran away a bunch as usual, but I grabbed 1 zone with my gobbers while he grabbed 2 others. I figured that as long as I protected 2 zones I was safe. I ran Caine out of one of the zones with a trampling Blitzer and with that side of the board cleared I could have won as long as Caine misses 1 of his 4 pistol shots which he of course fails to do and the Trolls lose.
I didn’t have any fury management problems like I thought I would. Left some extra fury on the axer once and he frenzied, but crippled a hunter while doing it so it worked out.
Second game was against Scorcha. The scenario was that the central zone is divided into 6 16″x14″ areas. You have to control 2 of your side’s and one of your opponents. Despite this scenario being tough for my army, I was also stupid and bunched up my trolls so they could all be knocked down by Scorcha. Not a whole lot else to say, I actually ended up losing by caster kill as my beasts were all ineffective.
I was thinking about adding in the Fell Caller for the stand up ability even though none of his other abilities work on beasts and the second game convinced me. Also I can throw my own guys and stand them up to attack. That sounds like fun.
I fell fine with the fury management. It seem strange to me people only taking as much fury in beasts as their caster has fury. I mean I can see how it works and have been beaten by it before, but I think that it would make me feel too cautious and not be nearly as fun.
Not sure I’m in love with the Axer. His animus is great but I can get a similar effect from Lanyssa or Grim and I’ve just not been feeling him. Wondering whether to replace him with the Krielstone Bearer.
I’m having a lot of fun with the army and the models are great looking. I am also planning on trying out Calandra and Hoarluk.
Army for next game:
Dire Troll Mauler
Dire Troll Blitzer
Krielstone with UA

I’ve started building and painting up the battle box for the Trollbloods for Privateer Press’s Hordes. They’re great, large fantasy models. I didn’t want the weapons to look too new and shiny so I’ve been working on painting rust and patination on the metals.
For the rust I’ve painted the whole area with a dark brown. I then add some bright orange to that brown and stippled the color over the area, leaving a small area brown. I added more orange and stippled more lightly about 3 or 4 times. I then stippled the highlighted area with dark brass color, followed by a dark metal.
For the brass area, I painted the whole area in a dark green. I then mixed in some white and a little blue. When I just added white, the color was a little off, the blue gave it that Statue of Libertyesque hue. I stippled a couple more layers adding more white. I then stippled and drybrushed a dark brass followed by a bronze. By drybrushing a little less carefully that I normally would, it leaves some nice random patches of the green.
