For week 3 of our New Year’s resolution to watch a new movie every week we watched The Dark Knight Rises, the third installment in Chris Nolan’s Batman trilogy. Before I say any more, I should probably note that my wife and I might be the only two people in the world who liked Batman Begins better than The Dark Knight. Yes, Heath Ledger was great but I thought it had some serious pacing issues which is a big problem for me. I still liked them both a lot, just loved Batman Begins. So where does The Dark Knight Rises rate?

New Year’s Movie Week 2: Looper
Continuing the New Year’s resolution to watch a new movie every week, we watched Looper. It seems to be turning into and Emily Blunt marathon.
I really loved Joseph Gordon-Levitt in the movie and his makeup prosthetic were great. The sci-fi concept they introduced, that of the “looper” was really interesting. Basically people in the future invent time travel and the mob use it to send back people they need offed. Eventually to ensure that you don’t spill the beans, they will send your older self back for you to kill.
The plot was interesting but the movie just struck me as okay. I wouldn’t say that there were plot holes but there were more than a couple of times where we asked things like, “Can’t they just send the bodies back?” and other questions that might be minor spoilers. When you start to ask too many of these questions it sort of takes you out of the movie. The ending also felt lackluster. I was hoping for an awesome 12 Monkey style ending. I did not get it.
On the whole, I would say that it wasn’t bad. I’m glad I saw it but I won’t be watching it again as I would with most movies I even kind of like. I’m giving it a 5 on Metacritic.
Wife’s New Year’s Resolution
We’re not generally ones for resolutions but this year my wife decided that we would watch a new movie every week. That’s the kind of resolution can get behind!
It’s not really gaming but I wager that there will be a fair share of geeky films.
